JUNIOR MATCHPLAY LEAGUE 2010
Week 1
Harlow started their season with a home match against Bardsey. In round one Harlow took an early lead 15 games to 12 after Jake Hill playing his first junior match won his singles game 7-2 and Olivia Adams and Siobhan Pywell won their doubles 6-3.
In round two Olivia Adams won her singles 5-4 for Harlow but back came Bardsey winning the to remaining matches 6-3 in both.
The score going into the last round of doubles was Harlow 26 Bardsey 28. This round ended all square 5-4 to Andrew Yeoman / Owen Colyer for Bardsey and 5-4 to Jake Hill / Siobhan Pywell for Harlow. Final score Harlow 35 Bardsey 37. Andrew Yeoman won all his matches for Bardsey.
Week 2
Wetherby continued their winning ways beating Dacre A 53-19 and after beating Dacre in their first match this puts them top of the table. Bardsey had a good win over Dacre 42-30 with Owen Colyer winning all his matches for Bardsey. Harlow beat Starbeck 45-27 with Ben Smith (11) winning all his matches in his first appearance of the season. He had good support from Jake Hill, Oliiva Adams and Siobhan Pywell.
Week 4
Spa beat Dacre 64-11, for Spa Sam Longbottom-Smith won two of his matches 9-0.
Starbeck recorded their first win of the season beating Dacre A 38-34. C Miller and J Swindlehurst won their singles and partnered each other to win at doubles. Harlow had a good win over Kirby Malzeard 58-14. Robbie Smith, Jake Hill, Siobhan Pywell and Olivia Adams represented Harlow.
Week 5
Pride of place this week goes to the fightback by Bardsey at home to Spa. In round one Spa led 18-9, Bardsey won round two 14-13 to make the match score 23-31 to Spa. But in the final two doubles Bardsey won 13-5 therefore the match ended in a draw 36-36.
Harlow continued their good run with a 42-30 win over Dacre. Lucca di Virgilio (11 yrs) played in his first match for Harlow, Ben Smith (11 yrs) Olivia Adams and Siobhan Pywell completed the Harlow team. Olivia Adams won all her matches.
Week 6
Coming into the final matches Wetherby, Bardsey and Harlow were in contention with Spa (2 matches) to play so an exciting situation for the title I thought. But sadly Spa were determined to win the title. Spa v Dacre A result was 69-3 to Spa, this league doesn't want cricket scores or children humiliated. Spa didn't have to pick both Ben and Sam Longbottom-Smith as they already knew the strength of Dacre A after beating Dacre's 1st team 61-11.
If children are willing to play competitive tennis then each team organiser should attempt to make it an enjoyable match and introduce beginners. I played two 11 year old boys against Dacre, they lost but gained experience. My decision cost Harlow the league title but I don't regret it.
Dave Oddy.
